Hi Gerry, kindly tell us about yourself

My name is Gerry and I am a natural hair and lifestyle blogger (blog: naturallyg.com). I am a secondary/ high school teacher by profession as well as a qualified hairstylist. When I am not teaching, I am working on all things linked to my emerging business Naturally G Ltd. My business includes regular natural hair and lifestyle blogs, an online hair consultancy service, A mobile Hair consultancy service, A natural hair guide which can be purchased as a paperback book through Amazon or as an eBook directly through my website and My own hair and skincare line named ‘Naturally Gold’ which will be available to the wider public very soon.

What made you decide to start the blog? Was it a thoughtful choice?

I decided to begin my blog due to the interest I received regarding my natural hair journey. I was getting asked so many questions regarding how I managed to grow healthy and long natural hair. I even found myself giving presentations on hair care regimes to some of the students I taught. So, one day about 2 years ago I decided that I would share this journey through a blog post to educate and inspire others with kinkier hair textures on how to promote healthy natural hair which was able to grow long. At this point, I had been on my natural hair journey for about 4 years and I had managed to grow my hair to mid-back length, when straightened. The longest I had ever grown it previously was to shoulder-length when it was relaxed.

Good, so how was the starting response?

I received such a positive response to this first blog and friends and family were a great support. Because of this, I was inspired to continue to blog about my natural hair experience and give advice on the best practices in the pursuit to achieve and maintain healthy natural hair that can grow to longer lengths.

So, now how many hours do you give to your work and what do you enjoy most?

Currently, I do not blog as much as I would like due to time constraints, but I have set a goal for myself to blog every other week which has still been a struggle but I intend to become more consistent again. It varies the amount of time spent on each blog depending on how detailed it needs to be but I estimate that each blog post takes me roughly 2 hours to write and edit.

Being hair and beauty blogger, what’s your go-to outfit?

I’m usually dressed professionally for work and like to wear slim-fit trousers and pencil skirts with a variety of different shirts. On my days off I live in slim fit jeans which I pair with a nice top or jumper.

Is there any beauty or hair care product you use regularly?

I now have my own product line ‘Naturally Gold’ (includes a shampoo, deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner and an oil sealant) which I have formulated using natural and naturally derived ingredients, so I mostly use these. If not, I use products by ‘Shea Moisture’ or As I Am which all work well on my hair and contain quality ingredients.

What do you do if you don’t like a product that’s been sent to you for review?

I haven’t yet been approached to review any hair products but have tried many brands aimed at natural hair care over the years. I will always be honest about any products used. It is important to be aware that not all products that work for me will work for others and vice versa.

Do you have any inspiration in this field?

My inspiration over the years has been Naturally 85. Her videos were my go-to when I embarked on my natural hair journey and her practices helped me to achieve healthier and longer hair.

You do have a good number of fans following, what kind of thing they ask most about?

Questions I often get asked from my followers are product related. They want advice on the best products to use and information on how to create their own with natural ingredients.

Any message to the fans?

I am grateful for all the support I continue to receive and so happy that I can advise others on their natural hair journeys. I want to help inspire the younger generations to love and embrace their natural hair no matter what the texture.
